Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passed away following a helicopter crash in a mountainous region of North-West Iran on Sunday.
The country’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, was also on board the helicopter and tragically lost his life in the accident. Rescue teams discovered the crash site on Monday morning, more than 12 hours after the president and foreign minister went missing.
A senior Iranian official confirmed the deaths of President Raisi, the foreign minister, and all other passengers in the helicopter during a press conference.
The official mentioned that President Raisi’s helicopter was completely destroyed in the crash, and there are fears that all passengers perished. Raisi, aged 63, was a prominent figure considered a potential successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as Iran’s Supreme Leader.
The helicopter crash occurred after President Raisi visited the border with Azerbaijan. Images from the crash site showed the aircraft had collided with a mountain peak, although the exact cause of the accident remains unknown.
