Video: Royal Gesture: Governor Prostrates Before Ooni of Ife at 2026 Osun Campaign Closing

By Oluwadamilare Daniels

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has drawn attention after footage emerged showing him prostrating before His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, during the official closing ceremony of the 2026 Osun Governorship Campaign.

The moment occurred as the governor approached the royal throne. As Adeleke came forward, the Ooni extended his hand, apparently expecting a handshake. Rather than simply take the monarch’s hand, however, the governor chose to prostrate before the revered traditional ruler in a gesture widely interpreted as one of deep respect, humility and cultural loyalty.

The symbolic encounter quickly became one of the notable moments of the event, with observers describing Adeleke’s action as a reflection of his Yoruba heritage and his connection to the ancient Ile-Ife tradition.

For many Yoruba people, Ile-Ife occupies a unique place in history and culture as the ancestral home associated with Oduduwa, regarded in Yoruba tradition as the progenitor of the Yoruba people. The Ooni, as the traditional ruler of Ife, therefore occupies a position of immense cultural and spiritual significance.

Adeleke’s decision to prostrate, despite the Ooni reaching out for a handshake, was seen by supporters and cultural enthusiasts as more than a customary greeting. It was interpreted as a public demonstration of humility before the throne of Ife and an affirmation of his identity as a son of Oduduwa.

The gesture also underscored the importance of traditional institutions in Yoruba society, where respect for elders, kings and custodians of culture remains deeply rooted in social values.

The closing of the 2026 Osun Governorship Campaign provided the backdrop for the encounter, bringing together political figures, supporters, traditional stakeholders and other members of the public.

While political campaigns are often dominated by speeches, rallies and political messaging, Adeleke’s interaction with the Ooni offered a different kind of spectacle—one centred on culture, tradition and the symbolism of royal authority.

The governor’s prostration has since generated conversations among observers, particularly those who viewed the gesture as a reminder that political office does not necessarily diminish the cultural values and traditional courtesies of the Yoruba people.

Beyond the political significance of the gathering, the moment captured the enduring relationship between contemporary governance and traditional institutions in Osun State, where the history of Yoruba civilisation remains closely connected to the heritage of Ile-Ife.

For Adeleke, the gesture appeared to communicate a simple but powerful message: before the political office he occupies, there remains a deep-rooted cultural identity and respect for the throne of Ife.

In a society where gestures can sometimes speak louder than words, the governor’s decision to prostrate before the Ooni transformed an otherwise formal royal encounter into one of the most memorable moments of the campaign’s closing ceremony.
