(Video) Homowo Festival: Sacred Ritual Marks Celebration of Ga Heritage in Ghana
A woman was captured in viral footage carrying a sacred bowl containing water, herbs and other ritual items used during the twins’ spiritual bath at the 2026 Homowo Festival in Ghana on Saturday, August 8.
The woman, who was reportedly chosen to perform the ritual, was seen carrying the sacred contents to a nearby lagoon or the sea, where they were to be disposed of as part of a traditional ceremony symbolising the cleansing and removal of evil from the community.
The ritual formed part of the colourful activities marking the annual Homowo Festival, one of the most significant cultural celebrations of the Ga people.
Thousands of Ga people, including members of the community living outside their ancestral homeland, returned to Accra to participate in the festivities. The festival honours their ancestors and commemorates the Ga people’s historic triumph over hunger, hardship and adversity.
The celebration featured a rich display of traditional rituals, music, colourful costumes, dancing and communal gatherings, bringing together families and communities in a vibrant expression of Ga identity and cultural heritage.
The annual festival continues to serve as both a spiritual observance and a powerful reminder of the resilience, unity and enduring traditions of the Ga people.
