Wahab: No restriction on movement during sanitation exercise
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has clarified that there are no restrictions on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state.
Wahab made this statement in a post on X on Saturday, responding to an inquiry from an X user, #Faveo Autos, who questioned the penalties for movement during the exercise and reported an arrest at the Ikeja Police Station.
The user, Faveo Autos, had posed the question to the commissioner, asking, “What is the fine for movement during environmental… Ikeja police station?”
In response, the commissioner asserted that any arrest made due to movement during the exercise is unlawful and does not align with the stance of the state government.
“To clarify, there is no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Therefore, detaining anyone for moving during this period is unlawful and does not reflect the position or policy of the Lagos State Government,” he stated.
Wahab further elaborated that the exercise was reinstated to promote and enhance the culture of environmental cleanliness throughout the state, emphasizing that it is supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
“The monthly environmental sanitation exercise was reintroduced primarily to restore and strengthen the culture of environmental cleanliness across the state. This initiative is supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017. However, the law does not impose any restrictions on movement during the exercise,” he concluded.
