The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, have decided to halt their strike for a period of five days, as confirmed by a leader of the NLC in Abuja.

The labour unions are set to release a statement just before the commencement of talks with the government. The strike, which began on Monday, was initiated to protest the government’s delay in approving a new minimum wage by May 31 and its refusal to reverse the increase in electricity tariffs. Following a lengthy meeting with labour leaders in Abuja on Monday night, the Federal Government assured its commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to raise the minimum wage to over N60,000.

The agreement outlines that the President is dedicated to establishing a higher National Minimum Wage, and the Tripartite Committee will meet daily over the next week to finalize the details. Organised labour has also agreed to convene meetings to discuss the new offer, with assurances that no worker will be victimized for participating in the strike.

These decisions were endorsed on behalf of the Federal Government by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
