CGC Adewale Clamours For Implementation Of Geospatial Technology To Improve Borders Surveillance

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has reiterated the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) dedication to utilizing advanced technology to improve border security. This topic was central to the discussions during his courtesy visit to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday, 6th March 2025. During this meeting, he underscored the NCS’s initiatives in implementing Geospatial technology to enhance surveillance, intelligence collection, and enforcement operations along Nigeria’s land and maritime borders.

In his remarks, CGC Adeniyi stressed the vital importance of technology in contemporary border management, highlighting that the Service has achieved considerable advancements in adopting innovative solutions to address smuggling, trafficking, and other cross-border criminal activities.
Technology is pivotal for effective border management in the current dynamic security environment. The Nigeria Customs Service is dedicated to utilizing Geospatial technology and other innovative solutions to improve its surveillance, intelligence collection, and enforcement capabilities. These initiatives aim to conform to international best practices while addressing the specific border security challenges faced by Nigeria, as stated by CGC Adeniyi.
The CGC elaborated that these technology-driven strategies would not only enhance the nation’s capacity to combat illicit trade but also promote smooth and legitimate cross-border transactions.
In response, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu praised the Nigeria Customs Service for its proactive stance on border security and trade facilitation, emphasizing that technology is essential for protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The Customs Service has shown a strong commitment to modernization and efficiency in securing our borders. The integration of advanced technology into border management represents a significant advancement and aligns seamlessly with our overarching national security goals. We are optimistic that these innovations will improve border control operations while ensuring that legitimate trade is not obstructed,” remarked the NSA.
The meeting underscored the necessity of inter-agency collaboration in addressing security threats and maintaining national stability. The NSA assured the CGC of ongoing support for the modernization agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service, highlighting the importance of synergy in intelligence sharing and operational coordination.
